Session chair for Dutch Neuroscience 2024; Microglia balancing the Neuronal Circuits

This summer, Dutch Neuroscience 2024 is set to be a compelling convergence of microglia experts. Our ambition is to catalyze a dynamic exchange of the most recent discoveries on microglia's essential role in shaping neural circuits and oscillations. From exploring microglia's impact on GABAergic signaling and circuit oscillation to investigating microglia's involvement in myelin clearance, as well as cutting-edge research using human iPSCs and live imaging of microglia in resected human brain tissue, the scope of discussion promises to be broad and deeply informative.

Session chair for European Glia meeting 2023, Berlin; "Wrapping Memories with Myelin"
On July 10th, I had the distinct privilege of orchestrating a captivating session entitled 'Wrapping Memories with Myelin.' This session delved deep into the intriguing question: does myelination act as a protective shield or a cognitive hindrance? We brought together a stellar ensemble of experts, including luminaries like Prof. Michael Ewers from ISD Munich, Dr. Olamide Adebiyi from Western University in London, and the versatile Dr. Constanze Depp, who adeptly navigates roles at both Harvard Medical School and the Max Planck Institute in Göttingen. It was a personal thrill for me to join these esteemed colleagues in representing this exciting discourse at the European Glia Meeting 2023 in Berlin. Our conversation spanned an impressive spectrum of perspectives, stretching from in-depth pre-clinical investigations to cutting-edge clinical research. We even embarked on a fascinating journey into the intricate realm of single-axon recordings and the expansive landscape of human MRI studies. Together, we explored the outer limits of our understanding of the enigmatic influence of myelin on our cognitive faculties. |
Training at Cajal Advance Neuroscience school 2023, Bordeaux.
More than 110 years ago, Ramon Y Cajal astutely stated that the "understanding of glial cells may remain a challenge until physiologists develop improved methods to study them". Last week, I had the privilege of training the next generation of physiologists at the Cajal Advance Neuroscience course focused on Glial cells in Bordeaux. It was an exhilarating experience to witness how far we have advanced in our knowledge, yet simultaneously realize how much we still have to uncover about the intricate Neuron-Glia interaction in both healthy and diseased brains. Throughout the intensive two weeks training, we delved into the intriguing question of why Microglia may be responsive to local circuit frequencies.
